Theatre and Dance Director

Position Summary:

Marlboro College seeks a part-time Technical Director for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Technical Director is responsible for all technical aspects of the Whittemore Theater and Serkin Performing Arts buildings, and for supporting the Theater and Dance programs through set design and light design while facilitating productions and events. In consultation with theater and dance faculty, the technical director trains and manages the student workers who staff the theater and performing arts building.

The Technical Director is a nine-month position averaging under 30 hours per week during the academic year and is ineligible for benefits.

Essential Functions/Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage performance spaces and technology, maintaining the sound, lighting, and projection equipment;
  • Oversee the design, set up and striking of performances and other events, including 2-4 student theater productions and 2-6 dance shows for the 2019-2020 year;
  • Support students in technical theater through tutorials as needed; and be otherwise responsive to the needs of a diverse and ambitious student population
  • Train, mentor and supervise student workers in a liberal arts environment, modeling excellent collaboration skills;
  • Collaborate with performance faculty on budget management and capital requests. Draft, monitor, and maintain production budgets and schedules;
  • Work with faculty and marketing department on technical and artistic requirements for productions and events;
  • Work a variable and flexible schedule as needed, supporting productions and events weekdays, evenings and weekends.

Position Requirements:

  • BA or BFA with emphasis in technical theatre at time of application
  • Two years’ experience in technical theatre
  • Master carpentry and electrician skills
  • Knowledge of set and light design

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MFA in technical theatre by time of appointment
  • Knowledge of stage management and projection
  • Five years of experience in technical theatre production
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level
